National Standards Implications for Support Staff

Papatoetoe South Primary School, Manukau.14 Learning Assistants discussed the implications of National Standards for  children and support staff in primary schools. These issues were raised:

Concern that the student focus groups for L.As to be working with, will shift from the children who are our lowest achievers to those who are 'just below ' National Standards thresh- holds. 'At risk'children may go into the "too hard " basket.

Much larger groups of students for L.A.s to work with- diminishing learning outcomes for students.

More training required for support staff both in admin and associates duties. Will there be enough money for this to occur. Will all support staff receive appropriate training for this?

More resources required for students, money for this?

Extra duties/responsibilities for support staff. Will these be reflected in job descriptions and gradings/remuneration? We already know that schools struggle with the consraints of the "ops grant".
